What to Do to Relax Before an Exam

Well, that absolutely depends on the day and time of the exam. How much time do you have? If you have a week before an exam then, you a lot of time to get yourself under control.

Now, if the exam is within a very short time, like a day or morning, then we need to earnestly get some cooling down time.

Self-examination would be my first approach. Ask yourself a series of questions about you as a test taker. Sit quietly, and ask yourself about test taking in general. If you are completely terrified of taking a test, we need to handle this in a very different way. My advice would be to do some role modeling sessions where you see yourself with eyes closed sitting in a test taking site. See yourself at a desk with the test in front of you. See yourself answering all the questions well. See yourself placing a number to the side of the scratch paper that you need to give more thought to. See yourself finishing on time and feeling just great.

Another attempt will be to program yourself, so well that the moment you sit down to take any test within seconds your brain goes into automatic robot mode and the next time you look up you are already done with the exam. It is as if you were hypnotized the whole time. Getting into that state of mind is quite easy, but you need to show some patience. You usually do the programming at least a week ahead of the exam date.

So, let's get more urgent. The test is today. Whatever you do, do not drink a lot of beverages, like water. Eat a very light meal if your test is in the morning or afternoon. Try to eat memory improvement fruits like the blueberry. The right drugs or herbal products may help if you think you cannot do without them.

You want to show confidence at the exam. Wear comfortable clothes. Make sure that you bring all the necessary items. You know, the exam officials that say bring a pencil or pen, a calculator or scratch paper. Do not fail to follow the rules. That alone can make your get extremely upset and emotional.

Get a good night's sleep and most importantly have a plan on how you are going to tackle this test. Hopefully, you would have gotten some clear advice on the exam before sitting down. It helps to know it is multiple choice, essay or fill in.

The general consensus is that most people can get at least 20 to 30% on any test. So that is some good news. Your test taking strategy has to be solid. For example, make sure you understand that if you guess, you will be penalized or not penalized. Be certain to answer questions that you know immediately and those that you doubt or have some question about, you place the number of the question or problem on your scratch paper, only to go back to them later. Do not stop to pick the roses. You know or you do not know it.

Breathing is important as you take an exam. Usually, your rate would be higher depending on the seriousness of the exam. You know, the exam that you feel you must pass.

I usually advice people to try to take the exam in another venue, in another setting, where it does not count as much. For example, say you want an administrative assistant position for the city of Los Angeles. Well, California has 102 cities. Take the administrative exam at a different city or county or state, or for the federal government. You are doing this just for practice because remember you really want the position in Los Angeles.

By jumping all over the place you are building up confidence and loads of time. Besides, who knows where you would really wind up, right? With your luck you will pass all the other cities and partial pass on the exam for Los Angeles.

When you get the chance during the exam, Open and close your eyes for a little rest and relaxation. They will not think that you are sleeping. Wiggle your toes a little if you feel nervous or upset. Do not tap your pencil on the table or chew your tongue or bit your lips.

If you ever find the time, take a few moments and go to a refreshing site, or try to remember an enjoyable time with someone special. Do not let this get to busy, right? Because you want to maintain your focus. If you have hours before the exam, make sure you do something very relaxing. Maybe get a massage, get your nails or toes done. Do not be afraid to pamper yourself a little.

The key is to make sure you know how to relax and recall that technique. Make sure you have the exam time in order. Know when it finishes and starts. Carry a watch into the exam area. I think that they still allow candidates do that. If not, there should be a clock on the wall. You need to time yourself, so that you do not get upset and start rushing yourself.
